Star Trek: Attack Wing
I.K.S. Kronos One/K’t'inga Class Ship
4 of 4 Wave 1 Star Trek: Attack Wing Expansion Packs
Releases: October 2013
“In Space, All Warriors Are Cold Warriors.”
–General Chang, to James T. Kirk (Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country)
Once more unto the breach to take a special sneak peek at the last ship in Star Trek: Attack Wing’s first wave of expansions. In this last week we look at the Klingon’s newest addition to the game: the I.K.S. Kronos One. Coming in at 24 SP, the I.K.S. Kronos One makes a great addition to a player’s fleet with its ability to cause opposing ships to roll one fewer attack die when firing upon her at Range 3. Two unique captains– Chang and Gorkon– have two very different combat philosophies represented in their special abilities. Chang has the unique ability to disable an opposing Captain Card of a ship which he has in target lock while Gorkon can “sue for peace” by causing his ship and every ship attacking him to roll 2 fewer attack dice for a turn.
No Star Trek: Attack Wing expansion would be complete without a few interesting Upgrades as well. Kerla
can assist in avoiding hits by converting one Battle Station result
into an Evasive Maneuver result if the attacking ship is within Range
1. Stex also provides a defensive boost but in the form of the
ability to keep Crew Upgrades from being disabled or discarded by the
opponent. For the more offensive minded individual, the unique skill Once More Unto The Breach
will greatly enhance the already potent Klingon ship’s attack potential
by allowing a ship’s Primary Weapon to make two total attacks during a
round at a -1 attack die penalty– however, this bold move comes at the
price of not being able to roll any defense dice for the remainder of
the round.
Keeping with the offensive nature of the Klingons, the I.K.S. Kronos One
expansion pack also contains two new Weapon Upgrades for players to
consider and both will be able to be used with great effect on one of
the first Klingon ships to sport a rear firing arc! First we see the
Klingon faction get a 5 attack Proton Torpedo very similar to
their Federation and Romulan counterparts which allows the player to
convert one Battle Station result into a Critical Hit. The Klingons
also get a new addition to their arsenal in the form of Concussive Charges. We’re going to take a bit more in depth look at this card as it has a lot going on with it.
Like many Weapon Upgrades, the Concussive Charges
require a Target Lock in order to use them in an attack. They can be
used at range 2-3 with an attack of 4. When the player lands a hit or
critical hit in the attack, they also get the benefit of removing 1
token of their choice that is next to the target ship for each
uncancelled hit or crit. This gives the player the ability to remove a
Scan, Battle Stations, Evasive Maneuver or Target Lock token. You can
even remove a cloak token which will then mean the opponent’s ship has
lost the defensive dice bonus from cloaking but their shields are
still disabled until the End Phase of the turn. All of these will
nicely set up the opponent for a devastating attack from another ship in
your fleet that round.
As you can see the I.K.S. Kronos One Expansion Pack has a wonderful balance of offensive and defensive offerings for a player as well as new Effect Tokens to help players remember card abilities when they are activated. You’ll surely get use out of all of the components as you build a 120 point fleet and try to get Gorkon across enemy space while attempting to complete the Escort The Chancellor’s Ship mission that also comes in the expansion. With the I.K.S. Maht-H’a and I.K.S. Negh’Var running alongside the I.K.S. Kronos One, it’s a sure bet that the Chancellor’s dream of peace will not die today.
