The players embody railroad moguls who have been commissioned to build the Trans-Siberian Railway, as well as two additional railroads. In addition to track construction, the players will purchase new locomotives, promote industrialization, and hire workers and engineers. All this is done in the lofty pursuit of acquiring the most victory points – the truest measurement of a player’s rail building skills.
Without locomotives, even the best-built railroads are useless. The locomotive is one of the most important aspects in Russian Railroads. Without them, you won’t go very far in the game.
To build a locomotive, you will need locomotive actions. You will then have to place the required number of workers on the action spaces in order to add a locomotive to your player board. You must take the lowest numbered locomotive available on the draw piles.
There are three different locomotive actions possible. The first one asks you to pay one worker in order to take 1 locomotive that you place on one of your railroads. The second option has the same effect but requires two workers. The final action requires three workers and allows you to take one locomotive and one factory.
Throughout the game, you will be able to upgrade your locomotives, allowing you to reach greater distances, which is a great asset in this game. When you upgrade a locomotive, you simply replace an existing locomotive with one whose number is higher. The “old” locomotive can then be moved to one of the other railroads on your player board. This sometimes creates chain reactions of locomotive updates.
Why should I upgrade to bigger and better locomotives?
At the end of each round of scoring, you will only score points for the spaces you can reach with your locomotives. There are also special spaces amongst the railroads that offer special benefits.
Pay attention to the locomotives you build and make sure that they reach the special spaces on the various tracks. Without the track bonuses, you are likely to not make it to the end triumphantly.
