Greetings Samurai of Rokugan,
I would like to take a few moments to explain the reasoning behind my decision to spearhead the change in tournament structure from a best of one system, to a best two out of three match system.
Firstly, extending the playing round to 75 minutes allows for a variety of deck building, and promotes optional playstyle’s. You can win a round, under the Floor Rules 2-0, 2-1, or 1-0. All of these are completely viable and workable ways to play Legend of the Five Rings. Having a deck that wins most of its matches 2-0 will be better strength of schedule wise then a 1-0 victory, but that is a players decision on what type of deck they want to play in Ivory Edition at a given tournament. Allowing this diversity in deck building is paramount for all players.
It also allows a better means of determining who has the better deck and player skill for a given match up. This will reduce the chance of players losing to a “Gold Screw!” in a key game, play in round or elimination. This will encourage players to expand their play skills to recognize when a situation dictates that conceding a game would be more beneficial for their chances of winning a match. It is a skill that will require practice, but will allow for bad draws to be less damaging to a players overall record.
That, in and of itself, is a huge advantage of the extended time frame “best two out of three” match system when compared to the older, and shorter timed, “best of one” game system that was in place.
Secondly, players will have the opportunity to play more games of Legend of the Five Rings than they previously did. If one did not ‘Make the Cut’ in a 7 round event, they would only get 7 games in for their entry fee. Now within the first 3 rounds of an event they will have the chance to play up to 9 games of Legend of the Five Rings, and over the course of an event even more if they so choose. This is a boon to those learning to play the game, and to those who simply play for love of the game, as they will be able to play even more games to gain greater experience.
Thirdly, the best two out of three match system allows for more extensive tiebreakers to be utilized determining strength of schedule. Now you can have two players with 4-2 overall records, but a player who won every match 2-0 will break the tie with the player who won any matches 2-1//1-0. In this way, players now have direct involvement with their own secondary tiebreakers rather than going directly from head-to-head results into various strength of schedule metrics. This was not possible with the prior system as it was best of one, and therefore severely limited in its application.
Fourthly, for new players coming into the game the best two out of three match system is a fairer representation of deck construction and skill, then the old best of one game format. As stated the new format mitigates bad draws, and rewards people for being able to win a majority of their games in a given match up.
The review of the 2014 Floor Rules was discussed between a number of individuals including AEG staff and Tournament Organizers, and that discussion is ongoing as this is a living document. To be clear, the discussion was weighed on both sides about implementation. Based upon our discussions, collective experience, and bringing together all the ideas that were generated, the 2014 Floor Rules were created under my initiative.
The timing of the announcement was the earliest a completed document was created, that I approved of, for the playerbase of Legend of the Five Rings. I understand where the timing was not optimum, particularly for the 2014 Kotei Season Tournament Organizers. That was my responsibility, and I apologize for the inconvenience. I am personally willing, and able, to work with Tournament Organizers around the world to help them make any adjustments to their applications. If you are one of these individuals, please email me at: Events@Alderac.com
If a Tournament Organizer has any concerns pertaining to the length of their event, please make contact with the above email and I would be happy to discuss this concern with you also at the above email.
As in years past, and stated within the document itself, the 2014 Floor Rules is a living document. All feedback, and data, provided is reviewed and will go towards to improving the document in the future.
I hope the above explanation sheds a clearer light on my reasoning behind the implemented changes to the Legend of the Five Rings tournament structure. I look forward to continuing to strive to make Legend of the Five Rings events the best possible for our current, and future, playerbase.
Best Regards,
