Samurai of Rokugan!
Her Divine Majesty Iweko I has issued a summons to the clans to once more send their most esteemed ambassadors to the Imperial Winter Court. The Court, to be held in Toshi Ranbo during the months of Hida, Togashi and Fu Leng, will deal with many matters of great import to the Empire. Foremost among these weighty affairs will be the selection of the Imperial Heir.
Yes, beginning on or about December 1, 2014, AEG will once again be conducting the Imperial Winter Court “play by forum” role playing game event. For those who may not be familiar with such an event, essentially, players will assume the roles of samurai—including bushi, shugenja and courtiers—from the Great Clans, the various Minor Clans, the monastic orders and even lordless ronin, in an online role playing game. Interaction will be via posts made by players, in the personae of their player characters (PCs), and by Game Masters (GMs), representing non-player characters (NPCs), as well as various events that may occur during the event. Essentially, you will post “in character” and receive “in character” responses, as you maneuver your way through the turbulent political landscape of the Imperial court. Your aim will be to gain honor, prestige and other rewards for your clan (and, if you’re so inclined, yourself), while seeking to thwart the ambitions of other PCs and their clans. You can get an idea of what a Winter Court event is like by taking a look at the last one, run in early 2013.
This is the fourth such Winter Court event, and will draw extensively on lessons learned in the previous three. One of the most important is that everything that occurs will be “canon”, in the sense that it will become part of the official story of Rokugan, including having a direct impact on the recently-announced Legend of the Five Rings novel. Of course, we at AEG reserve the right to disallow or change things that either make no sense, or that would work better for the greater story in a different way. In general, however, you will be able to affect the official storyline through your role playing actions. This includes having the opportunity to influence one of the most important story decisions that will be facing the Empire later this year—selection of the Imperial heir. We’re also going to encouraging a much more intense Winter Court experience, with an emphasis on scheming, political shenanigans and general conflict among the various factions participating. Our hope is to make players anxious not only about succeeding in Winter Court, but also about just surviving it with their honor and reputations intact.
More detailed information will be coming soon. In the meantime, consider if you wish to participate, and if you wish to do so as an Assistant GM, or as a player, as we will be recruiting both types of participants through the summer. In fact, recruiting of Assistant GMs will begin on or about June 1. Now, start honing your political skills, because with what we’re planning for Winter Court 4, you’re definitely going to need them!
