After Action Report – Strategic & Adventure Game Association Game Day @ El Toro Public Library, June 28, 2014

I hosted the Strategic and Adventure Game Association Game Day at the El Toro Public Library on Saturday.  With everyone now on summer break and there being less than a week until the 4^th of July holiday I was not certain what the attendance would be like.  Usually in the summer months fewer people go to the events.  We did see more people at the event than we had two weeks ago.  There were 18 people at the event and up to five games were being played at any one time.

I played two games at the event.  Both of them were from the Empire Builder family of games.  To review, in the Empire Builder family of games the players own railroad companies that are competing to build rail lines and move freight from one city to another based on a set of demand cards that they have.  Once a demand on a demand card is completed the player discards it and draws a new one from the deck.  Included in the demand card deck are a number of disaster cards which include things like derailments and river floods which impede the player’s progress to victory.  In order to win the game, the player must be the first to have track connecting a number of major cities on the board and have at least $250 million dollars.

The first game I played was Russian Rails.  Russian Rails starts in the Soviet Union era and can extend to after the fall of communism.  The board includes the western half of the Soviet Union extending east to Alma- Ata in what is now Kazakhstan.  The game plays similarly to all of the other games in the Empire Builder family.  The game was the first to add bonus deliver cards in a big way to the game.  It also has a unique hazard card that causes the fall of communism which takes away 20% of all of the player money and adds a toll for people entering Russia from the other countries that used to make up the Soviet Union.

After Action Report – Board Game Night @ Comic Quest, June 26, 2014

I went to the Board Game Night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  The turnout was much larger than I expected with 30 people being there.  Much of this had to do with Paradise Perks, a local coffee shop which also hosted a Thursday night game event closing its doors after five years.  At least six people that used to attend Paradise Perks regularly attended this week’s Comic Quest event.  There were six games being played at any one time.

The ending of the Paradise Perks event was also the second blow to the Orange County gaming community after Monday Night Gameing with Marieke ended the previous week.  Even though I had not been to either event in quite a while, I know that both of them will be missed.

I had heard about Free RPG Day a few weeks ago.  This is supposed to be a day that is effectively a combination of Free Comic Book Day and International Tabletop Day.  The idea behind it is to give the participants a feel for role playing games by providing them with starters to game systems and provide their first exposure to the games through introductory adventures.

I decided that I would go to this event for two reasons.  The first was that it was a weekend where I did not have another event that I would normally attend happening so I was looking for something to do with my Saturday morning/afternoon.  The other reason was that I wanted to give Pathfinder a try.

I had a fun but difficult night at Board Game Night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  I preformed very poorly at the games that I played which was a bummer after the great performance I had last Saturday.  There were 20 people at the event with five games being played at any one time.

I played three games at the event.

The first game I played was Alhambra.  In Alhambra players are trying to build the best palace complex by acquiring buildings that enhance increase its value.  The more expensive the building the more versatility it has in the way of being able to build more additions to the complex.

After Action Report – Strategic & Adventure Game Association Game Day @ El Toro Public Library, June 14, 2014

I hosted the Strategic & Adventure Game Association game Day at the El Toro Public Library on Saturday.  There were 18 people in attendance and up to five games were being played at once.

I decided that starting with this month’s event that I would institute a score keeping protocol for the group where we would start keeping track of the results of the games that were being played at the event with the idea of providing prizes at the end of the year for the best players.  This used to be done as part of the Orange County Board Gamers group until the organizers did not have time for it so I decided to institute it on a smaller scale.  The plan is to do this across the So Cal Game Connection meetup group which I and another event organizer started.  Participation is voluntary so any information I get from it will most likely be incomplete but I still think the exercise will still be worthwhile.

The contest runs from June 18th through July 18th. Entries can be submitted at any time during the contest. As I ramp up development and turn words into final drafts, I plan to share more and more content. So here’s a good way to start: Necromancy. This is just the paths. It’s a pretty big chunk of wordcount, though. I felt it deserved a lot of attention, so did Thaumaturgy. Because, you know, Cappadocians, Tremere, all that jazz. We also have a couple of additional bloodlines that use Necromancy.

This draws a little from Dark Ages, a little from V20, and a little from new design. If thinks go the way I think, I have one more Path to add before we finish. It’s a Google Doc, so ignore formatting issues.

After Action Report – Games Gathering @ Brookhurst Hobbies, June 7, 2014

I attended the Games Gathering event at Brookhurst Hobbies on Saturday.  The store was quite crowded as they had three events going on at once.  Amidst the Magic and Pathfinder players there were five tables board games being played with 25 players attending just for board games.

I was able to play three games at the event.

The games were all from the Empire Builder family.  To review, in the Empire Builder family of games the players own railroad companies that are competing to build rail lines and move freight from one city to another based on a set of demand cards that they have.  Once a demand on a demand card is completed the player discards it and draws a new one from the deck.  Included in the demand card deck are a number of disaster cards which include things like derailments and river floods which impede the player’s progress to victory.  In order to win the game, the player must be the first to have track connecting a number of major cities on the board and have at least $250 million dollars.

After Action Report – Board Game Night @ Comic Quest, June 5, 2014

I went to Board Game Night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  There was a good crowd at the event.  There approximately 20 people at the event and up to five games being played at any one time.

I played four games that evening.

The first game I played was Trans America.  Trans America is a game that is deceptively easy to learn but is very difficult to master.  In Trans America the players are required to connect up five different cities in different regions of the United States.  The players start building track from their starting post.  If they connect up to another player’s track, they can build off of that player’s track as well as their own.  In this way players wind up helping each other out while trying to achieve their own goals.
