WizKids Press Release - Star Trek: Attack Wing I.R.W. Praetus/Romulan Scout Ship Preview

Star Trek: Attack Wing

I.R.W. Praetus/Romulan Scout Ship

3 of 4 Wave 1 Star Trek: Attack Wing Expansion Packs

Releases: October 2013

 STAW 71270
Hello again, Star Trek Attack Wing fans and welcome back to another sneak peek into the upcoming ships of the Wave 1 release.  This week we shift our focus to the mid-22nd century and see what the I.R.W. Praetus Expansion Pack has in store for us.  The first thing we notice is that this is the first deviation from the way in which ships are represented in an expansion pack.  Usually we will see the unique ship have a higher shield value and a SP cost of two more points than its non-unique version.  However, the I.R.W. Praetus has the exact same combat values and SP point cost as the regular Romulan Bird-Of-Prey as neither ship has any shields.  What the I.R.W. Praetus does bring to the table over the non-unique version is the Cloak and Sensor Echo actions thanks to its special ability to cloak even without any active shields.  This ability does come with a drawback as a player could inadvertently cause a point of damage to their hull on an unlucky roll.

Ship - Praetus Ship - Romulan Bird of Prey

The I.R.W. Praetus also provides some interesting new options to the game.  The unique captain Valdore will get great use out of the nimble movement dial of the ship as his ability to add one attack die to an attack only comes into effect if he is outside of his target’s forward firing arc.  This ability will team well with the Nuclear Missiles weapon upgrade which is also present in the set: having the option to reroll one blank result while adding an attack die from Valdore to increase the attack to four will make this 2 SP upgrade worth much more than its slight cost.

Two Tech upgrades are also included in the I.R.W. Praetus expansion that will work well on many different Romulan ships.  The Polarized Hull Plating allows the player to convert 1 Critical Hit into a normal Hit which will benefit many of the Romulan ships that just love to deactivate their shields to enter cloak mode.  The other Tech upgrade comes in the form of Cloaked Mines.  This upgrade allows the I.R.W. Praetus to place a Minefield Token (found in the Star Trek: Attack Wing starter set) anywhere within Range 2 during the Planning Phase as long as it is not within Range 2 of an opponent’s ship.  Once an enemy passes within range 1 of the token, they are going to hope that none of the three attack dice come up as hits or critical hits as they do not get to roll defensive dice to avoid the damage.  Luckily, ships which perform a Scan action can react to the threat and decrease the dice roll to only 2 attack dice.  It’s also nice to note that the Cloaked Mines are used as the initiating factor for the Emergency Repairs mission that comes in the expansion.

Tech - Polarized Hull Plating Tech - Cloaked Mines

With all of the above going for it (including Effect Tokens to assist players in remembering card effects), the I.R.W. Praetus Expansion Pack will enhance the choices for many Romulan players in the months to come.  Its ability to impact the battle field with Cloaked Mines or serve as a secondary attacker when paired with the I.R.W. Valdore and the R.I.S Apnex will help spread the influence of the Romulan Star Empire in no time.

Come back next week as we take a look at the final ship in Star Trek: Attack Wing’s undiscovered country (that’s “the future”, folks!): the I.K.S. Kronos One.

Z-Man Games Press Release - Essen Game Previews – BRUXELLES 1893 - Something Special: Stock Exchange

From the Z-Man Games Website

Brussels, 1893: Victor Horta build Autrique House and Tassel House, recognized as the first “Art Nouveau” buildings where the fluidity of the spaces echoes curvilinear and botanical forms, incorporating ironworks, mosaics, frescos, and stained glass windows. The same year, Paul Hankar erects his own house. The Belgian capital because the birthplace of this innovative movement that would make an impression on all Europe, and impact the greatest architects of the Bell Époque.

In Bruxelles 1893, you will find a variety of different actions separated into various phases. The diversity of those actions is so great that we will only be presenting one of the most innovative features: the Stock Exchange.

At the beginning of each round, the starting player reveals the top card from the Stock Exchange deck. The information on this card will determine the available play area on the Art Nouveau Board.

The various lines on the Stock Exchange cards correspond to a different number of players. Each line of the Stock Exchange cards contains 2 pairs of numbers. Each pair designates a shield on the Art Nouveau board. The first number represents the row, and the second, the column. The starting player much chose one of the shields from the two proposed.

Then, by tracing a horizontal and vertical line from the shield selected, the Art Nouveau board is separated into 4 distinct areas. The active player then places a Bracket tiles on the chosen shield, oriented toward the largest of the 4 areas. This area is now the only area available for the round on the Art Nouveau board.

With this system, some actions will not be available in certain rounds, so players will have to take calculated risks on what actions to take in each round.

Bruxelles 1893 is just one of the many fantastic games that you can discover at our booth in Essen as of October 24th.

Game Review – Lost Cities: The Board Game

Lost Cities:  The Board Game
Number of Players
2 - 4
Play Time
30 Minutes (Short Game);  75 Minutes (Long Game)
Ages
8 Years and up

For those that are looking for a game that has the theme of an Indiana Jones movie, I submit the game Lost Cities:  The Board Game.

In Lost Cities:  The Board Game the players are trying to complete archeological expeditions.  The players are given 5 explorers at the beginning of the game, one large and four small ones.  The farther along on an expedition track their explorer gets, the more points they score.  They must be careful when starting an expedition because if they do not move their explorer at least four spaces up that track they will lose points.  The large explorer is awarded double the points for their position on the expedition they are trying to complete.

The players move their explorer along the track by playing out cards in the color of the expedition in front of them in ascending order.  The deck of cards has cards in sets of five different colors.  Each set of cards has two cards for each number ranging from 0 to 10.  When a player plays a card in front of them it must be a number that is equal to or greater than the last card they played in that set.  Each time the player places a card in front of them they move their explorer up the expedition track.  As an alternative they players may discard a card in the player area on the board of that color.  These cards can be picked up later by other players instead of drawing from the deck.

The round ends when 5 explorers are moved 7 or more spaces up the expedition track or when the deck of cards is depleted.

On each expedition track there are bonus tokens available that give out extra points, allow the player to move an extra space up the track, or give the player a monument.  The monuments are worth additional points at the end of the game.  If you do not collect enough of them during the game you will lose points.

There is a variant rule where the player may choose to play the cards out in either ascending or descending order.   The order must be determined when the card is placed.

I find Lost Cities:  The Board game to be a fun game.  It is quick to teach and can be played in a 30 minutes if the short game is played, which consists of only one round.  The full game lasts for 3 rounds.

The problem I have with it is the randomness of the game.  If you do not start the game with a set of cards that have low numbers on them you are almost guaranteed to lose the round.  The variant rule on starting sets with high cards does help remove the randomness of the cards a player gets so I insist that it is played when I am playing the game.

Lost Cities: The Board Game is one of those games that can be used to introduce new players to Euro games.  It has a competitive element to it with the races up the expedition tracks to get to capture the bonus chips, which many people that are familiar with mainstream games like Candyland and Monopoly understand.  Because of this it may be more suited as an introductory game than Ticket to Ride, which is a much better game for players that are familiar with card games.

I recommend this game for people that want to show off what modern board games are like but know their friends will not like Ticket to Ride.  I do not consider it a replacement of the Lost Cities.  The games do share a number of concepts such as theme and starting giving negative points unless a certain level is reached, but other than that they are entirely different games and should be treated as such.
