The Game Crafter Press Release - ViaB KS: Overlords

From the Game Crafter Website

My name is Bill Paterno and I am 36 years old. I currently reside in Pennsylvania with my wife, our two sons, and our two dogs. I work as a motion graphics designer for an advertising agency in Center City, Philadelphia.

Like most of you, I have a fondness for (some would say an addiction to) playing games. It really does not matter what kind; video games, puzzles, tabletop games, card games… I enjoy them all. When I stumbled across The Game Crafter website last year I realized that I could actually create my own professional looking game, inexpensively. Since then I have not looked back!

Overlords is a game which I designed for The Game Crafter’s Micro Game contest. It was originally going to be a dice-based dungeon crawl game that was inspired by my younger years playing Dungeons & Dragons. And one of my fondest memories of playing D&D was the Monster Manual. I was always thumbing through it and admiring the artwork. For this game, I really wanted to have a similar look and feel with my game.

So I broke out a pack of index cards and began to work on a design. I even had my good friend and coworker, Jorge, start the artwork. However, after a couple of weeks I realized that, although I was making progress, this game was not the right fit for the contest. I needed to find another game model that was simpler, streamlined, and I needed to keep the fantasy theme that we already started work on. I looked at all the pencil sketches Jorge had given me and laid them out while I thought of new direction to go. The sketches looked like a collection of portraits. I thought, perhaps a collection game would work. And that is how Overlords began.

I spent the next month working on sets and scoring, making each monster unique in it’s own way. And then I began to play the game. It was good fun but the game needed more flavor… more player interaction. So I created another set of cards called Hired Hands. These characters grant a player a special ability at the expense of generally scoring less points. Adding just a few Hired Hand cards to the game deck made the game more interactive and created numerous “take that” moments between players.

Since then, I have play tested the game over 75 times, including over 20 sessions of blind play testing, and made refinements to the rules and scoring. I have included a list of suggested variants for different players. There is even a 2 versus 2 team play option that has been a big hit with players.

Overlords ended up finishing third in the contest and has already received a very positive review from All Us Geeks with several other reviews scheduled to drop soon. I am really proud of the final product and honored that The Game Crafter would include Overlords in their Kickstarter campaign. Thanks for checking it out!

The Game Crafter Press Release - Village in a Box Kickstarter Now Live

From the Game Crafter Website

The Village in a Box kickstarter is now live. We’re trying a little experiment by bundling  bunch of games together for this project.

Village in a Box is a wonderful game at a remarkable price. In it you’re an impoverished medieval noble trying to build a decent home for your miserable subjects. For just $15 you can get the game shipped to your door. And as part of the Kickstarter we have multiple stretch goals which enhance the already wonderful game even more.

But I also said there were other games in this campaign. There are eight in all: Village in a Box, Dungeoneering Dolls, Overlords, Trade Fleet, Railroads, Monster City Planners, Starship Battles, and Noueni. If you want all eight you can get it for a breathtaking price of just $89 including shipping! If you don’t want all eight, you you can use add-ons to pick just 3 or 4 games. These are all great games, that we played and loved enough to want to bring them to you. But you don’t have to take our word for it. All Us Geeks, Gamer’s Remorse, and Father Geek have all been reviewing games in this bundle.

The designers who built these games have all been pouring their blood sweat and tears into this campaign. Not just in originally designing the games, but also producing content specifically for the Kickstart campaign. They’ve also been tightening up the game play of each of their games, so that you get the best possible version of each game. So hop on over to Kickstarter and pledge your support for these designers and their games!

The Game Crafter Press Release - ViaB KS: Overlords

From the Game Crafter Website

The evil empire is divided. Amidst the chaos, several overlords emerge to claim rule over all by raising great armies of hellish creatures. They all yearn for power but only one will emerge victorious.

Overlords is a set collection, card drafting game for 2-4 players. Each turn, players recruit one card from their hand and then pass the rest of their hand to the player on their left. Every time a card is recruited, it goes into that player’s army pile. Only the top card is visible in each player’s army at any given time. There are two types of cards available in the game—Monster cards and Hired Hand cards. Each Monster card has a unique scoring mechanism. Players must recruit them wisely in order to maximize the amount of points of their army. Hired hand cards are placed separate from an army and, when activated, have special abilities that affect the game. The player who raises the most powerful army (scores the most points), wins!

The Game Crafter Press Release - TGC’s Kickstarter Experiment: Village in a Box

From the Game Crafter Website

Next week Wednesday we’re going to attempt a bold new experiment: we’re going to run a Kickstarter bundle project. Basically, we hand picked 8 games that we really like and are putting them together as a bundle for a very low price. This is an experiment, because we’re testing out both the bundle concept, and the methodology for running a campaign to see how the larger gaming community likes it. If it does well, we’ll do more in the future.

In our first ever bundle, there are 8 games, starting with our favorite game in the bundle Village in a Box.

We’re working with the designer of Village in a Box, Peter Jackson, to develop some new expansions as stretch goals.

The other games in the bundle (in no particular order) are: Trade Fleet, Noueni, Dungeoneering Dolls, Railroads, Monster City Planners, Starship Battles, and Overlords. We feel they’re all great games in their own right, but you don’t have to take our word for it. Over the next few weeks Gamer’s Remorse will be releasing reviews on each one of these games so you can get a better feel for them.

We’ll post more details soon. We just wanted to give you a heads up that this was happening. We’d love to hear your feedback on this little experiment of ours. Leave some comments below!
