The Game Crafter Press Release - ViaB KS: Dungeoneering Dolls

From the Game Crafter Website

David Sheppard, creator of Dungoneering Dolls told us a bit about how the game came to be.

When the Microgame Competition came around, I saw it as an opportunity to challenge myself on multiple levels. My games generally run a bit too long and use overly expensive components. So I wanted to make a game that takes less than 15 minutes to play. But there was another challenge I added to myself that would finally make all those art sets people got me for various christmases worthwhile and that’s learning to watercolor.

The game design itself when largely without a problem as a black and white prototype was crafted within a matter of hours. The biggest imbalances came from a few of the Limited Editions not being interesting and the Quests being 4 points instead of 3. This meant, no matter what, acquiring a quest was a point gain whereas I wanted the winner to possibly miss out on most of the quests. But next came the bigger issue and that is the art aspect.

The lineart was a simple affair and easy to transfer but it wasn’t under I started actually painting that I realized how much of a task I set before myself. You see, some of the characters, like the Thief, were the most detailed and I tackled them first. Hindsight, this was likely a mistake as I made some areas of the paper too wet which created clumping (You can see it in the final art if you look really, really close). Learning to control the saturation of the paint was also a long tasks. While some characters took longer than others (King, Ranger, Berserker), I averaged out 7-10 hours per illustration and since this was a learning process, I took longer than it really should have. The game boasts 25 unique illustrations.

Yes, this means Percival Thistlewood’s Incredible Dungeoneering Dolls features my first ever attempt at painting with watercolors (and painting in general, I barely dabble in). It’s no small leap to say this is the most beautiful game I’ve ever produced. This is such a beautiful game that I created a bigger art version found in the Tarot Edition. Both versions are identical but any changes can be found in the FAQ downloadable on both of the games pages.

The Game Crafter Press Release - Village in a Box Kickstarter Now Live

From the Game Crafter Website

The Village in a Box kickstarter is now live. We’re trying a little experiment by bundling  bunch of games together for this project.

Village in a Box is a wonderful game at a remarkable price. In it you’re an impoverished medieval noble trying to build a decent home for your miserable subjects. For just $15 you can get the game shipped to your door. And as part of the Kickstarter we have multiple stretch goals which enhance the already wonderful game even more.

But I also said there were other games in this campaign. There are eight in all: Village in a Box, Dungeoneering Dolls, Overlords, Trade Fleet, Railroads, Monster City Planners, Starship Battles, and Noueni. If you want all eight you can get it for a breathtaking price of just $89 including shipping! If you don’t want all eight, you you can use add-ons to pick just 3 or 4 games. These are all great games, that we played and loved enough to want to bring them to you. But you don’t have to take our word for it. All Us Geeks, Gamer’s Remorse, and Father Geek have all been reviewing games in this bundle.

The designers who built these games have all been pouring their blood sweat and tears into this campaign. Not just in originally designing the games, but also producing content specifically for the Kickstart campaign. They’ve also been tightening up the game play of each of their games, so that you get the best possible version of each game. So hop on over to Kickstarter and pledge your support for these designers and their games!

The Game Crafter Press Release - TGC’s Kickstarter Experiment: Village in a Box

From the Game Crafter Website

Next week Wednesday we’re going to attempt a bold new experiment: we’re going to run a Kickstarter bundle project. Basically, we hand picked 8 games that we really like and are putting them together as a bundle for a very low price. This is an experiment, because we’re testing out both the bundle concept, and the methodology for running a campaign to see how the larger gaming community likes it. If it does well, we’ll do more in the future.

In our first ever bundle, there are 8 games, starting with our favorite game in the bundle Village in a Box.

We’re working with the designer of Village in a Box, Peter Jackson, to develop some new expansions as stretch goals.

The other games in the bundle (in no particular order) are: Trade Fleet, Noueni, Dungeoneering Dolls, Railroads, Monster City Planners, Starship Battles, and Overlords. We feel they’re all great games in their own right, but you don’t have to take our word for it. Over the next few weeks Gamer’s Remorse will be releasing reviews on each one of these games so you can get a better feel for them.

We’ll post more details soon. We just wanted to give you a heads up that this was happening. We’d love to hear your feedback on this little experiment of ours. Leave some comments below!
