Scorecard Review – September 2013

Now that September is being put into the rear view mirror it is time to do a review of the Scorecard.

September

September was a very active month for me as I played the second most number of games in a month thus far this year.

I played 22 games over the course of 7 events during the month for an average of 3.14 games per event which is up from the 2.67 games per event I played in August.  It is the highest number of games I have played per event in a month thus far this year beating the record of 3 games per event I played in April.  This can be attributed to the 11 games I played in the last week of September.

The number of games that I won in September doubled to 6 games compared to the 3 games in August.  I came in second 9 times, third 5 times, fourth one time, and fifth one time.  May Average standing for September was 2.18 which is an improvement from 2.67 I had in August.

I played six games more than one in September:  Bazaar, India Rails, Lost Cities: the Board Game, Martian Rails, Take It Easy!, and Trans America.

I played four games for the first time in September:  Castle Panic, Evo, Rialto, and Santa Fe Rails.

Year to Date

The total number of games I have played year to date 100 games at 39 events for an average of 2.56 games per event.  This is up 0.12 games per event since our last check in.

I have won 15 games thus far this year.  This improved my overall standing for the year to 2.64 which is better by 0.13 from the 2.77 I had at the end of August.

My stats shifted over to the positive side with the 6 victories and 9 second places I had in September.  I still did have a fourth and a fifth place due to problems I had in games of Empire Builder and Trans America, but they did not hurt me too much.  Hopefully I will see this trend continue into October.

Z-Man Games Press Release - Essen Game Previews - CARCASSONNE SOUTH SEAS - Something Special: Collecting Wares.

Carcassonne South Seas is part of a new series “Around the World” that will allow you to discover the world in all its magnificence. While we do not know what new regions will be discovered next, we know that there will be different aspects that what you are used to in Carcassonne.

What is different with South Seas?

Contrarily to traditional Carcassonne, in South Seas you do not score points when you complete a Bridge/Island/Sea Region/Market. Instead, you gather the Wares depicted on the tiles. Bananas on the Islands, fish in the Seas, shells on Bridges. Markets give you Ship tokens, but we will get back to those later. 

A completed Bridge will give you shells. You gather the number of shells you see on the tiles that constitute your Bridge. In this case, the completed Bridge will give the player 4 shells.

 

A completed Island gives you bananas. You will gather the number of bananas depicted on the tiles that form your Island. In this case, the player would receive 4 bananas for completing the Island.

 

A completed Sea Region will give you fish. You will reel-in the number of fish you see on the tiles that complete your Sea Region. In this case, two tiles have 2 fish, and one tile has 1, for a total of 5 fish.

Ok, so what do I do with all these shells, bananas, and fish?

You gather Wares throughout the game, in order to get points. At the end of your turn, you can choose to deliver Wares to a Ship. Once the correct wares have been delivered to the ship, the player who delivered the Wares wins the boat. Ships are worth a certain number of points. 

 

  

Didn’t you say something about Markets?

In Carcassonne South Seas, Markets are the equivalent of Monasteries. However, they are not scored as they would be in a normal Carcassonne Game. You will still have to surround the Market tile with 8 tiles in order to score points, however, the points will not be scored immediately. Completed Markets will give Ship tokens. When you complete a Market, you will receive the Ship token with the highest value, without having to pay the Wares depicted on it. You essentially get it for free, with a little hard work!
