After Action Report – Board Game Night @ Comic Quest, August 28, 2014

I attended the game night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  The attendance was lower than is has been in previous weeks with only 17 people at the event and four games being played at any one time.  The Labor Day holiday coming up on the weekend probably has something to do with it. 

The upside to it was that I did get to play two games that I had not played before.  One of them I got to play three times.

The first game I played was Princes of the Dragon Throne.  Princes of the Dragon Throne is an area control game that uses a deck of cards that the player builds during the game to do things.

After Action Report – Strategic & Adventure Game Association Game Day @ the El Toro Public Library, August 23, 2014

I hosted the Strategic & Adventure Game Association Game Day at the El Toro Public Library on Saturday.  There were 21 people at the event with five games being played at any one time.

I played three games at the event.

The first game I played was Empire Builder.  Empire Builder is a game of rail building and goods transportation in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.  The players own railroad companies that are competing to build rail lines and move freight from one city to another based on a set of demand cards that they have.  Once a demand on a demand card is completed the player discards it and draws a new one from the deck.  Included in the demand card deck are a number of disaster cards which include things like derailments and river floods which impede the player’s progress to victory.

After Action Report - Board Game Night @ Comic Quest, August 21, 2014

I attended Board Game Night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  There were 25 people at the event with six games being played at any one time.

I played two games at the event.

The first game I played was Ticket to Ride.  The theme of the game is that the players are owners of train companies that are building rail lines in the United States.   The goal is to establish routes between the cities on the tickets that the players receive.  If the players connect the cities on a ticket they will receive bonus points at the end of the game based on the value on the ticket.  If they do not connect the cities on one of their tickets the player loses the number of points on the ticket.  Points are also scored for placing trains between two cities on the board more trains needed the more points are scored.

After Action Report – Game Day @ The Guild House, August 16, 2014

I hosted So Cal Game Connection’s first exclusive event at a new game store called The Guild House in Bellflower.  I did not know what to expect going into the event as far attendance was concern.  So Cal Game Connection is a new and at this point relatively small Meetup group created by a friend of mine and me with the goal of having events for all tabletop gaming not just board games like many other Meetups in our area do.  We also wanted to have more of a voice for event hosts over what happens in the Meetup unlike most of the other Meetups in the area.

The Guild House is a nice sized space with a game area with eight tables set up for gaming including three that are specifically designed for miniatures play.  The owners of the store were good hosts and very friendly.

I attended the Board Game Night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  There was a good sized crowd of 22 people there and six game being played at any one time.  There was only time enough for me to play one game at the event.

Fan-favorite artist Phil Foglio, who has won three Hugo Awards for his work on the steampunk comic series Girl Genius, teams up with veteran designer Steve Jackson to bring the world of Munchkin Steampunk to life.

With Gen Con upon us, Alderac is pleased to announce the arrival of two new members of the L5R team. Joshua Githens has come on board to serve as Sales and Marketing Lead, while Rob Vaux will serve as L5R’s new Brand Lead.

Joshua hails from South Carolina, where he has tirelessly promoted games of all variety at Boardwalk Games in Greenville. Before joining Alderac, he spent 7 years performing marketing and promotion duties for Hasbro. He’s also worked as a human resources expert for Toys R’ Us and for Walt Disney World’s entertainment division. He’s a lifelong fan of Legend of the Five Rings, and is looking forward to working closely with the existing team.
