After Action Report – Board Game Night @ Comic Quest, May 29, 2014

I went to Board Game Night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  The night started slowly.  People really did not start showing up until about 30 minutes after the event was supposed to start.  We did end up getting a pretty good turnout.  There were 18 people at the event and four games were being played at any one time.  Event with the late start I was able to play two games.

The first game I played was called On the Underground.  On the Underground is a network development game.  The idea behind the game is the players are trying to help the passenger to move around London using the lines that they develop for the underground transportation system they have.  Depending on the number of players in the game each player receives the pieces that represent the lines that they can develop.  In a two player game each player gets four lines, in a three player game each player gets three lines and in a four or five player game each player gets two lines.

After Action Report – Strategic & Adventure Game Association Game Day @ El Toro Public Library, May 24, 2014

I hosted the Strategic & Adventure Game Association Game Day at the El Toro Public Library on Saturday.  I did not know what to expect for attendance since it was a holiday weekend and we were competing with a gaming convention in Los Angeles.  I was pleasantly surprised that we got 16 people at the event and there were four games being played at any one time.

I played four games at the event three of which were from the Empire Builder family.

The first game I played was Bazaar.  In Bazaar the players are gem traders trying to fulfill gem orders from demand cards in competition with the other players.  They do this by using two trading boards that represent the exchange rates for the market.  For example one red gem can be traded for two blue gems.  The players use the exchange to fulfill the demand cards as efficiently as possible to maximize their points.

After Action Report – Board Game Night @ Comic Quest, May 22, 2014

I attended Board Game Night at Comic Quest on Thursday.  There were 25 people at the event and five games were being played at any one time.

I played six games at the event including one game twice.

The first game I played was Lost Cities.  Lost Cities is one of the games from the first generation of Euro games that made it to the United States.  It is a two person card game.  The theme attached to the game is the players are leading expeditions to five lost cities.  What the players find in each city is represented in a deck of cards that consists of 5 suits of card that have cards numbered 1 – 10 and three multiplier cards.  Each player starts the game with a hand of 8 cards and they take turns either playing a card in front of them or discarding a card into the appropriate suit’s pile and then taking a card from the draw deck or one of the discard piles.  The game ends when the draw pile is depleted.

Two weeks ago, we announced “To Do What We Must,” the interactive L5R novel being penned by Robert “Spooky” Denton. Due out in 2016, this book will give L5R players new and interesting ways to interact with the storyline of the game. It is our goal to make this interaction both meaniful and exciting. We’ve already started utilizing feedback from social media outlets to make decisions. Now, we’re moving on to our next step in determining the fates of Rokugan.

Starting today, Spooky and Seth Anthony, the L5R Community Organizer, and members of the Design Team, will begin reviewing the winning decklists (top 2) from each Kotei held thus far this year. What are they looking for, you ask? Many players have longed for the days when what you played impacted the story and that interaction is now returning. They will be looking for patterns and themes that are prevalent among the decks used. Reoccuring trends such as Shadowlands taint, “fallen” personalities, honorable victories, Imperial intervention, employing Ronin, and the use of military might will be woven into the framework of the novel.

Today, Wizards of the Coast kicked off a pivotal year for Dungeons & Dragons, unveiling new serialized entertainment offerings that will bring the upcoming Tyranny of Dragons storyline to life as well as announcing the D&D Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide for the highly-anticipated new rules set for the D&D tabletop roleplaying game. Together, these new offerings will command the attention of digital and tabletop RPG players alike, setting the foundation for the future of the brand and powering incredible, action-packed play experiences for fans.

First out of the gates for Tyranny of Dragons digital offerings will be a new module for the highly-acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons MMO, Neverwinter, from Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment. The new module, aptly titled Tyranny of Dragons, will be the premier digital Dungeons & Dragons experience for players and will launch on August 14, 2014.

After Action Report – Boardgame Night @ Comic Quest, May 15, 2014

I went to Boardgame Night at Comic Quest on Thursday night.  The attendance was much lower at 15 people.  It may have been because people did not want to go out in the heat which exceeded 100 degrees.  There were four games being played at any one time.

I did play four of what I consider lighter games at the event.

The first game I played was Trans Europa.  Trans Europa is a game that is deceptively easy to learn but is very difficult to master.  In Trans Europa, the players are required to connect up five different cities in different regions of Europe.  The players start building track from their starting post.  If they connect up to another player’s track, they can build off of that player’s track as well as their own.  In this way players wind up helping each other out while trying to achieve their own goals.  A round ends after the first player reaches their cities.  All of the other players reduce their scores, which start at 13 points, by the number of spaces they missed hitting their cities by.  The game ends when one of the players loses all 13 of their points.  The winner is the person who has the most points remaining.
